why walnut and maple?
Walnut and maple are the classic choice for luxury chessboards. Their contrasting colours create a striking visual appeal, while their inherent durability ensures a robust playing surface. The specific end grain construction we employ offers superior resistance to scratches and wear, making these boards not just beautiful, but built to last for generations of play.
our handcrafted process
Each of our chessboards is crafted in a small batch of ten, ensuring individual attention and unique character – no two boards are identical. The timber is personally selected for its pristine quality, ensuring imperfection-free boards. The walnut and maple are precisely machined into staves before being meticulously glued together to create a distinctive "zebra crossing" pattern. This assembly is then cross-cut into 32mm thick sections, which are then carefully glued together in a specially made jigsaw. Finally, each completed board is hand-planed and sanded to achieve a super smooth finish, before being treated with a high-quality protective oil for lasting beauty and durability.
the advantage of end grain
Our chessboards feature end grain construction, a technique typically used in the creation of butchers' blocks due to its exceptional durability and resistance. This method means the end of the wood grain faces upwards, providing a playing surface that is significantly more robust and resilient against impacts and daily use. It's a testament to our commitment to creating high-quality, long-lasting pieces.
